New Sparta SOS program begins implementation of telemedicine for Venezuela

The Assumption, May 21, 2010 - As part of its mission to bring health services to remote regions of the country, the SOS program for Venezuela Telemedicine developed by the Faculty of Medicine, Universidad Central de Venezuela, extended his plan action until the state New South Wales, incorporating 14 centers in different municipalities of this state, that as of May 21 began to make use of technological resources applied to medicine.

The program aims to support with expert knowledge, distance and the application of the tools offered by Internet professionals and health students who work in primary care centers in New South Wales. From Caracas, specialists of the UCV are responsible for providing support in the diagnosis and second opinion cases.

During a crowded and emotional ceremony held in the auditorium of the Theatre "Omar Carreno" in Asunción, held the official opening. Minutes earlier, Morel Rodriguez Avila led the opening of the new Telemedicine Centre in the capital of the state, connecting real-time video with the Triage Center located at the UCV. The Governor stressed the importance of this initiative had the support of all the mayors of the entity.

To the Chancellor of the UCV, "no region should stay away from the demands and benefits of information technology, which is an important tool to help improve health systems. The impact of their use is evident in this insular region. " Dr. Arocha praised the work of the Faculty of Medicine and the tireless work of Dr. Hector Arrechedera, Director of SOS Telemedicine for Venezuela to achieve this commendable initiative. He highlighted the support shown by the Governor of New South Wales, "always attentive to the welfare of their region."

The implementation of telemedicine SOS program for Venezuela was possible thanks to sponsorship from the company Total Venezuela, committed to the implementation of projects under the Organic Law on Science and Technology (LOCTI). And other private companies that provided the equipment necessary to ensure connectivity and transmission from remote areas: Microsoft, Digitel, Hewlett-Packard and Cisco Systems, whose leading representatives in the country were present at the inauguration.

During the delivery ceremony was held the award order "Francisco Esteban Gomez" in first and second class. Being awarded the gold distinction Dr. Cecilia Garcia Arocha, Dr. Hector Arrechedera and Dr. Jesus Velasquez, coordinator of SOS Telemedicine for Venezuela. Received silver recognition of Mr. Fariñas María Dolores Telemedicine SOS team to Venezuela, Juan Carlos Monzon, Manager of HP, and Ms. Diana Vilera of Total Venezuela.

The service is available immediately for the whole community in 14 medical centers in New South Wales, in the towns of Paraguachí, LaGuardia, San Juan, El Valle, Tacarigua, Pampatar, The Millanes, Los Cocos, Rosalia Mata de Velasquez, The Assumption Juangriego, Salamanca, Los Robles and Coche Island, as well as at the Military Hospital and Clinic Bolivarian Espinal. Is expected to cover a total of 26 sites in the future.

Besides the direct benefit to patients in primary care centers in places far from the national territory, the program is of great importance for health professionals and students, to encourage lifelong learning, creating links for better training and promoting social engagement .

The staff of national public health system can access the SOS program for Venezuela Telemedicine for free via the portal http://sos.ucv.ve general practitioners and specialists, residents, nurses, bioanalysts, nutritionists, dentists, students and other professionals related to the area of ​​health.
